Do you wake up every morning reaching for your glasses? Are you tired of dealing with contact lenses, lens solutions, and the constant fear of losing your vision correction? If you have been searching for how to remove your eye number permanently, you are not alone. Millions of Indians — from teenagers to middle-aged adults — are now exploring permanent vision correction options that can free them from glasses and lenses forever.
At Vision Eye Centre, we help patients across India understand the best, safest, and most advanced surgical and non-surgical options to permanently eliminate their refractive error (eye number). In this guide, we cover everything you need to know.
In India, the term "eye number" refers to your refractive error — the degree to which your eyes need corrective lenses to see clearly. Refractive errors include:
Eye numbers are caused by the shape of the cornea or the length of the eyeball not matching perfectly, preventing light from focusing correctly on the retina. Genetics, excessive screen use, and poor lighting habits can all contribute.
Yes — modern laser and surgical technologies can permanently remove or significantly reduce your eye number in most cases. However, the right procedure depends on your age, eye health, corneal thickness, and prescription range. Let us break down each option.
LASIK is the most popular and widely performed refractive surgery in India and globally. During LASIK, a laser reshapes the cornea to correct the refractive error, allowing light to focus accurately on the retina. The procedure takes about 10–15 minutes per eye, and most patients achieve 6/6 vision within 24–48 hours.
Who is eligible: Age 18+, stable prescription for 1+ years, adequate corneal thickness, no dry eye disease.
Cost in India: ₹25,000–₹75,000 per eye depending on the technology used (standard, Bladeless, Wavefront-guided).

SMILE is a newer, flapless laser eye surgery that is gentler on the cornea than LASIK. Instead of creating a flap, a small lenticule (tissue disc) is extracted through a tiny incision, reshaping the cornea. SMILE is especially preferred for patients with dry eye tendencies or thin corneas.
Who is eligible: Age 22+, myopia up to -10 D, stable prescription for 1+ years.
Cost in India: ₹50,000–₹1,00,000 per eye.
ICL surgery is ideal for patients who are not candidates for laser surgery — typically those with very high prescriptions, thin corneas, or dry eyes. A thin, foldable lens is implanted inside the eye (between the iris and the natural lens) to correct vision. ICL does not remove corneal tissue, making it reversible.
Who is eligible: Age 21–45, high prescription (up to -20 D for myopia), good eye health.
Cost in India: ₹80,000–₹1,40,000 per eye.
PRK is an older form of laser eye surgery where the laser is applied directly to the corneal surface after removing the epithelium. It is a good option for patients with thin corneas who want to eliminate their eye number but are not LASIK candidates. Recovery takes slightly longer (5–7 days) but results are equally good.
Cost in India: ₹20,000–₹50,000 per eye.
RLE, also called clear lens extraction, is recommended for patients above 40 who also want to address presbyopia. The natural lens is replaced with a premium intraocular lens (IOL) that corrects distance, intermediate, and near vision simultaneously. It is essentially the same procedure as cataract surgery but performed before a cataract develops.
Cost in India: ₹60,000–₹1,50,000 per eye depending on the IOL type.
Patients recovering from eye surgery often have questions about under-eye changes. If you notice sunken or dark areas forming, read our detailed guide on how to fix under-eye hollows and what can be done.
Not everyone is suitable for every procedure. Here is a quick guide:
A comprehensive pre-surgical evaluation including corneal topography, pachymetry, dry eye assessment, and dilated retinal examination is mandatory before any procedure. Never choose a clinic that offers surgery without a thorough preoperative workup.
Before surgery, you will stop wearing contact lenses for 2–3 weeks (hard lenses: 4 weeks) to allow the cornea to resume its natural shape. The procedure itself is painless due to numbing eye drops. After LASIK or SMILE, you can return to work within 1–3 days. You will be asked to avoid swimming, rubbing eyes, and dust exposure for 2–4 weeks post-surgery.
Many patients also report that after removing their eye number, they become more conscious of cosmetic eye concerns like dark circles. If that is your situation, our blog on how to remove dark circles under eyes permanently offers practical, expert-backed solutions.
For patients above 18 with a stable prescription, LASIK, SMILE, and ICL provide permanent correction of the treated prescription. However, age-related changes (like presbyopia after 40) may still require reading glasses. In young patients, if myopia was still progressing at the time of surgery, some regression is possible. This is why stability of prescription for at least 12 months is a prerequisite.
Currently, no non-surgical method can permanently eliminate refractive error. Lifestyle habits, nutrition, and eye exercises may slow progression but cannot correct an existing eye number. Surgery remains the only permanent solution.
The minimum age recommended for LASIK surgery in India is 18 years, with a stable prescription for at least 12 months. Most surgeons prefer patients to be 21+ for better long-term outcomes.
For very high prescriptions (above -8 D), ICL surgery is generally safer and more effective than LASIK. Your eye surgeon will assess corneal thickness and other parameters before recommending the right option.
The actual laser treatment takes only 30–60 seconds per eye. The entire procedure including preparation takes about 15–20 minutes. Most patients are back home within 1–2 hours of arriving at the clinic.
Most patients achieve 6/6 (20/20) or better vision after LASIK. However, some may still need thin glasses for activities like night driving or reading (especially after age 40 due to presbyopia). Your surgeon will explain realistic outcomes during consultation.
Look for NABH-accredited centres with experienced refractive surgeons, FDA-approved laser platforms (like Wavelight EX500, MEL 90, VISUMAX), and transparent pre-op evaluation protocols. Vision Eye Centre offers all of these with a proven track record.
