It can seem impossible to keep every part of your body covered and protected from the elements during winter. Just like your hands need gloves and snow boots to keep your feet toasty, there are things you can do to keep your eyes healthy during the winter as well.
Wear sunglasses: Your eyes are protected from the sun and the wind and cold.
Use artificial tears: Cold weather can cause your eyes to become dry and irritated. Use artificial tears to help keep your eyes lubricated.
Take breaks from screens: Staring at screens for long durations can lead to eye fatigue. Make sure you take breaks every 20 minutes or so to allow your eyes to rest.
Adjust your workspace: If you work at a computer, ensure your workspace is set up so your eyes are level with the top of your monitor. Taking this step will help to reduce eye strain.
Stay Hydrated: It may seem like a no-brainer, but ensure you drink plenty of fluids, especially water. When the temperatures are dropping and winds are blowing, it’s easy for your eyes to lose moisture.
Your eyes may feel dry, sandy, or uncomfortable without proper hydration. Drinking at least eight ounces of water every few hours is an easy way to keep hydration in mind. Although it may seem difficult initially, drinking water will soon become a habit you enjoy.
Stay Away From Direct Heat Sources : Staying warm all winter is important, but smart ways exist. If you’re staying inside, make sure to stay away from fireplaces. You can stay warm even if you’re not directly in front of a fireplace.
Fireplaces can dry out your eyes and skin, so keeping some distance is a smart way to stay toasty. The same goes for outdoor fires. Don’t stand too close, as the smoke from the fire can aggravate delicate eyes and dry them out if you’re not at a safe distance.
Control Indoor Moisture Levels : Ensure that your indoor environment has a proper moisture level. Humidifiers can help combat this issue. One way to tell if you’re living in conditions that are too dry is if you are experiencing excessive eye-rubbing or feel like you have low tear production.
Visit your eye doctor: If you wear glasses or contact lenses, it’s crucial to have your prescription updated regularly. Make sure you have your eyes examined annually by your eye doctor.
